With a land area of 796,095 sq. km. [including FATA (Federal Administered Tribal Areas) and FANA (Federal Administered Northern Areas)], its population stands at nearly 130.90 million, according to the 1998 Census. Historically, this is one of the most ancient lands known to man. Its cities flourished before Babylon was built; its people practiced the art of good living and citizenship before the celebrated ancient Greeks.

The region traces its history back to at least 2,500 years before Christ, when a highly developed civilization flourished in the Indus Valley. Excavations at Harappa, Mohenjodaro and Kot Diji have brought to light evidence of an advanced civilization flourishing here even in most ancient times. Around 1,500 B.C. the Aryans conquered this region and slowly pushed the Hindu inhabitants further east, towards the Ganges Valley. Later, the Persians occupied the northern regions in 5th century B.C. The Greeks came in 327 B.C., under Alexander of Macedonia, and ran through the region like a meteor. In 712 A.D. the Arabs, led by Mohammed Bin Qasim, landed somewhere near what is now Karachi, and ruled the lower half of Pakistan for two hundred years. During this time Islam took root and influenced the life, culture and traditions of the inhabitants of the region.

From 10th century A.D. onwards, a systematic conquest of Indo-Pakistan by the Muslims from Central Asia began and lasted up to 18th century A.D., when the British colonized the Sub-continent and ruled for nearly 200 years (for 100 years over what is now Pakistan). The Muslim revival began towards the end of the last century when Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, a renowned leader and educationist, launched a movement for intellectual renaissance of the Indian Muslims. In 1930, the well-known poet/philosopher, Dr. Mohammed Iqbal conceived the idea of a separate state for the Muslims of the Sub-continent, and in 1940, the All-India Muslim League adopted the famous Pakistan Resolution.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 179px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fF7Uu9KxvNM/SmWYGX6tKxI/AAAAAAAAAMM/Cz7H0oaFeyM/s320/1GJinnah%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360858166721325842" />

After seven years of untiring struggle, under the brilliant leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Pakistan emerged on the world map as a sovereign state on August 14, 1947, when the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two independent states - India and Pakistan.

WELCOMING SPRING IN PAKISTAN.

Spring Festivals

In Pakistan, the people have a penchant for fairs, festivities and good food. When winter yields to moderate and pleasant spring season about to start around the middle of February , the flower blossoms and abundance of greenery creates a fascinating and enchanting environment. The mild weather coupled with the I enchanting environment makes the people spellbound, who are overtaken by a festive mood and celebrate the advent of spring by organizing fairs, mostly in open spaces.

The spring festivities are a tradition, which has been practiced in this part of the world since ages. These festivities are characterized by folk dances, arts and crafts exhibitions, musical evenings, parade of floats, costume shows, kite flying competitions and food festivals, which are held in the main urban and rural centres allover the country

Lahore -the capital of Punjab Province and the second largest city of Pakistan -becomes a heaven for tourists. Both local and foreign tourists throng the provincial metropolis because of its beautiful gardens, exquisite fountains, hot and delicious cuisine, rich heritage of art and music and above all, friendly and hospitable people. The Lahorites do not lag behind. They too invite friends, relatives and tourists - both local and foreign -to join them in spring festivities, which commence after the first week of February and continue till the end of March

JASHEN BAHARAN

The highlight of these festivities s Jashen Baharan (The spring festival), which is popularly called Basant festival. This festival is being traditionally celebrated, since ages, to welcome the spring. However, it has, over the years, become a major tourist attraction. People from various walks of life, including diplomats, artists and celebrities, throng to Lahore from allover the country to be a part of this unique national event.

The entire community enthusiastically participates in kite flying competition, making Lahore skies, throughout day and night, resplendent with kites of various types, sizes and colours. These kites lend Lahore skies, during that period, the look of a big lake on whose surface can be seen floating innumerable giant size flower petals -nay water fowls of various sizes and colours.

Night time kite flying, accompanied by loud tempting music and fire-works, is also gaining in popularity because of the spectacular sight that it presents. One can see hundreds of white colour kites dancing at night on a well-lit sky and competing for supremacy. The winners in the kite flying competitions rejoice by beating drums.

On this occasion, people generally like to dress in yellow -the event's main colour depicting blossoming spring. However, some persons use only yellow scarves.

Basant is not only a kite flying event, but also a cultural festival of traditional food, costumes, arts, crafts, dance and music. The rich host family and friends celebrate the event with a lavish meal. Corporate hospitality is also visible and the trend among companies to host their guests, on this occasion, is on the increase,

The festival has gained world- wide popularity as a cultural festival of Pakistan and has, over the years, become a great tourist attraction. Though the tradition to celebrate this festival is very old, the scale at which its impact has now grown is comparatively new

National Horse & Cattle Show

Another prominent feature of the spring festival is National Horse and Cattle Show. It is one of the biggest cultural events of Pakistan, which is held in Lahore, on the onset of spring season. Some 2,000 animals including Pakistan's top-class horses, mules, cattle, buffaloes, camels, sheep and goats; and around 3,500 poultry birds are showcased at this annual event. On this occasion, teams from across the country participate in tent pegging, folk dances, band displays and tattoo shows. Horse and camel dances are also arranged on the occasion

The first Horse and Cattle Show was held in 1954 and since then the show has progressed gradually. The week-long show started, this year, from February 15. Pakistan President, General Pervez Musharraf, in a message on the occasion, stated

The National Horse and Cattle Show, which is epitomized by the glory , chivalry and grit of the past alongside the fruits of modernization and industry , would encourage farmers in raising the standard of horse and cattle breeding and also help promote unity, cohesion and healthy competition. Held in the splendour of Lahore spring, the timing of the Show makes it even more attractive, he added. Prime Minister, Mir Zafar Ullah Khan Jamali, in his message, noted that the Show symbolized the ethos of our people, who were largely agriculturists

Shandur Polo Festival

Held once a year during the months of July it is one of the most outstanding festivals that are held on Pakistan's North - The Shandur Polo Festival. The polo ground placed in Shandur (Chitral) is the highest polo ground in the world and visitors spend a whole week watching exciting polo matches with traditional music.A whole new world is built at Shandur before the event. For every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying.

Contents

Name
Climbing history
Early attempts

Key Information:
Tour Duration: 6 - 18 day(s)
Group Size: 2 - 70 people
Destination(s): Pakistan
Specialty Categories: Ecotourism
Season: January - December
Airfare Included: No
Tour Customizable: Yes
Minimum Per Person Price: 600 US Dollar (USD)
Maximum Per Person Price: 750 US Dollar (USD)

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arive at Islamabad Airport and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Drive Islamabad / Peshawar, Afternoon visiting of old city. The church was sanctified in May 1857, and the main road, The Mall, was built. The most significant commercial establishments, the Post Office, general merchants with European goods, tailors and a millinery, were established opposite the church. Until 1947, access to the Mall was restricted for non-Europeans.

Until 1876, Murree was the summer headquarters of the Punjab local government; after 1876 the headquarters were moved to Simla.

The railway connection with Lahore, the capital of the Punjab Province, made Murree a popular resort for Punjab officials, and the villas and other houses erected for the accommodation of English families gave it a European aspect. It was described in the Gazetteer of Rawalpindi District, 1893–94 as follows:

The sanatorium of Murree lied in north latitude 33 54' 30" and east longitude 73 26' 30", at an elevation of 7,517 feet (2,291 m) above sea level, and contained a standing population of 1,768 inhabitants, which was, however, enormously increased during the (May-November) season by the influx of visitors and their attendant servants and shopkeepers. It is the most accessible hill station in the Punjab, being distant from Rawalpindi only a five hours' journey by tonga dak. Magnificent views are to be obtained in the spring and autumn of the snow crowned mountains of Kashmir; and gorgeous sunset and cloud effects seen daily during the rains [July-August]. Part of the station, especially the Kashmir end, are also well wooded and pretty.[4] Murree also can boast of a world class educational establishment the *Lawrence School, Ghora Gali

In 1901 the population of the town was officially 1844, although if summer visitors had been included this could have been as high as 10,000.

In the hot season it was the headquarters of the 'Lieutenant General of the Northern Command. The Commissioner of the Rawalpindi Division and the Deputy-Commissioner of Rawalpindi also resided here during part of the hot season, for which period an Assistant Commissioner was placed in charge of the subdivision consisting of Murree Tehsil. The site was selected in 1850 almost immediately after the annexation of the Province, and building operations commenced at once. In 1851 temporary accommodation was provided for a detachment of troops ; and in 1853 permanent barracks were erected. The garrison generally consisted of three mountain batteries. In 1873, 1874, and 1875 Murree was the summer headquarters of the Punjab Government. It was connected with Rawalpindi town by a service of tongas.

The houses crown the summit and sides of an irregular ridge, commanding magnificent views over forest-clad hill-sides into deep valleys studded with villages and cultivated fields. The neighbouring hills were covered during the summer with encampments of British troops, while the station itself is filled with European visitors from the plains and travellers to Kashmir. A fine view of the snowy peaks of Kashmir is to be had on a clear day, and the crest of Nanga Parbat (26,184 feet) can sometimes be seen. The municipality was created in 1850.

The income during the ten years ending 1902-3 averaged Rs. 49,800, and the expenditure Rs. 48,200. In 1903-4 the income and expenditure were Rs. 5r,400, chiefly from octroi, and Rs. 54,400 respectively. The income and expenditure of cantonment funds averaged Rs. 10,000 between 1893 and 1903. The chief educational institutions are the Lawrence Military Asylum for soldiers' children, and the St. Denys' and Convent English schools for girls. The station contains the Lady Roberts Home for invalid officers and a branch of the Alliance Bank of Simla. The Murree Brewery was the only industrial concern of any importance.

Murree

Murree city (Punjabi, Urdu: مری) is a popular hill station and a summer resort, especially for the residents of Islamabad, and for the cities of the province of Punjab, Pakistan. Murree is also the administrative centre of Murree Tehsil, which is a sub-division of Rawalpindi District and includes the Murree Hills.

The name Murree is derived from 'marhi', "high place" although there is a popular belief it is named after the virgin Mary.

Description

Murree is one of the largest resort towns in the Galyat area of Pakistan, and is the capital city of Murree Tehsil (which is an administrative division of the Rawalpindi District). It is situated on the southern slopes of the Western Himalayan foothills as they ascend to the northeast towards Kashmir. During British Rule in the nineteenth century, its altitude was established at 7,000 feet (2,100 m), but its actual altitude has now been determined as 2,300 m (7,500 ft) above sea level.

Murree is accessible by road from the centre of the Islamabad and Rawalpindi areas. It is still associated with Britain; many British fruits (including cherries, raspberries and strawberries) thrive locally. There is a church, built in 1857, located at the centre of the town, which is still used as a place of worship. Many houses around the church are still standing, functioning mostly as hotels. Old traditional restaurants have been replaced by fast food shops and newer restaurants. Some old places of accommodation, such as the Rich Villa Inn and Gulberg Hotel, have completely disappeared. A typical hotel usually provides a motel type accommodation with breakfast and communication access. Newly built hotels are also accessible.

Murree has expanded since 1947 at a rate much greater than that which its infrastructure can sustain. Securing water and electricity has been a constant challenge. The jam-packed bazaar has caught fire a number of times in the last century, and the growth of tourism and a construction boom have had an adverse effect on the local environment.

History

Mountain pass

In a range of hills, or especially of mountains, a pass (also gap, notch, col, saddle, bwlch, brennig or bealach) is a saddle point in between two areas of higher elevation. If following the lowest possible route through a range, a pass is locally the highest point on that route. Since many of the world's mountain ranges have always presented formidable barriers to travel, passes have been important since before recorded history, and have played a key role in trade, war and migration.

Topographically, a pass has the general form of a saddle between two mountains. They are often found just above the source of a river, constituting a sort of "bridge" over to the headwaters of a different river. Passes may be very short, consisting of steep slopes to the top of the pass, or valleys of many kilometers, whose highest point is only identifiable by surveying.

Roads have long been built through passes, and more recently railways. Some high and rugged passes may have tunnels bored underneath, so as to allow faster traffic flow all year.

The top of a pass is frequently the only flat ground in the area, a high vantage point, so it is often a preferred site for buildings. For countries whose borders are delimited by a mountain range, the pass is typically part of the border, and the facilities likely include a border control or customs station, and possibly a military post as well, as relatively few soldiers are required to guard a pass.. For passes with roads, it is also customary to have a small roadside sign giving the name of the pass and its elevation above mean sea level.

As well as offering relatively easy travel between valleys, passes also provide a route between two mountain tops with a minimum of descent. As a result, it is common for tracks to meet at a pass; this often makes them convenient routes even when travelling between a summit and the valley floor.

There are thousands of named passes around the world, some of which are well-known, such as the Great St. Bernard Pass at 2,473 metres (8,110 ft) in the Alps, the Khyber Pass at 1,027 metres (3,370 ft) between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the Khardung La at 5,359 metres (17,580 ft) in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The Marsimik La at 5,590 metres (18,300 ft) is a lesser-known pass; it is one of the world's highest motorable passes and lies in India, on the northern-most tip of the Changthang Plateau, near the Chinese border.

There are many words for pass in the English-speaking world. In the United States, the southern Appalachians more commonly use the word gap, and notch is often heard in New England. Scotland has the Gaelic term bealach (anglicised "Balloch"). In the Lake District of north west England, the term hause is often used, although the term pass is also common — one distinction is that a pass can refer to a route, as well as the highest part thereof, while a hause is simply that highest part, often flattened somewhat into a high level plateau.

Babusar Pass

Babusar Pass or Babusar Top (el. 4173 m./13,691 ft.) is a mountain pass at the north of the 150 km. (95 miles) long Kaghan Valley connecting it via the Thak Nala with the Indus Valley. It is the highest point in Kaghan Valley.

The Kaghan Valley is at its best during summer (months ranging from May to September). In May the maximum temperature is 11 C (52 F) and the minimum temperature is 3 C (37 F). From the middle of July up to the end of September the road beyond Naran is open right up to Babusar Pass. However, movement is restricted during the monsoon and winter seasons. The Kaghan area can reached by road via the towns of Balakot, Abbottabad and Mansehra.

The Kaghan Valley’s most dramatic scenery is beyond Naran. Travel here is by 4WD, mountain bike, pony or on foot. Although there are efforts to upgrade the road, most progress has been made on the Chilas side. You should definitely get local advice before crossing the Babusar Pass. The PTDC in Naran is a good source; in Chilas, try field officers at the Northern Areas Public Works Department (NAPWD) executive engineer office, or Natco drivers on the Babusar village run.

At Battakundi, 16km up the valley, you can detour 5km up to summer pastures on Lalazar Plateau. There are resthouses in Battakundi and 15km up the valley at Burawai. It is near Malika Parbat in the Himalayan range.

It can be reached by a difficult trek from Saiful Mulook Lake. If one chooses to walk it takes more than eight hours for both going and coming back to the lake Saif ul Muluk. Horses can also be hired from the Lake Saif ul Muluk along with a guide person who will take you to Ansoo Lake. It costs almost 100$(PKR 4000) per horse but one still has to walk more than 50% of the distance himself. Another trek to reach Ansoo Lake is from Mahandri, which is 42 km below Naran, but this is a less trod route and the difficulties are unknown. The name "Ansoo" comes from its tear-like shape (the Urdu word Ansoo means teardrop). The lake is said to have been discovered in 1993 by Pakistan Air Force pilots who were flying low above the area. Earlier, the lake was not even known to the locals

Ansoo Lake Photo Gallery

Naran Valley

Naran Valley (Urdu: وادی ناران) is located in North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. It is the story of prince of Persia who fell in love with a fairy princess at the lake. The area was home to the pre-historic Soanian culture indigenous to this region. Numerous shopping bazaars, parks and a cosmopolitan population attract shoppers from all over Pakistan and abroad. Rawalpindi is also the military headquarters of the Pakistan Armed Forces and also served as the nation's capital while Islamabad was being constructed in the 1960s. The city is home to many industries and factories. Islamabad International Airport, formerly known as "Chaklala" airport, is actually in Rawalpindi; it serves the city along with the capital. Rawalpindi is located in the Punjab province, 277 km (172 miles) to the north-west of Lahore. It is the administrative seat of the Rawalpindi District. City is about 110 square kilometres (43 sq mi).

History

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 05px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 171px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fF7Uu9KxvNM/Sif841--G_I/AAAAAAAAABU/K3OgZ_5yPzE/s400/180px-Rwpmap%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343517536392453106" />

Rawalpindi, also known as Pindi, has a long history spread over several millennia. Archaeologists believe that a distinct culture flourished on this plateau as far back as 3000 years. The material remains found at the site prove the existence of a Buddhist establishment contemporary to Taxila and of a Vedic civilisation. The nearby town of Taxila has another significance; according to the Guinness Book of World Records it has the world's oldest university - Takshashila University.

Sir Alexander Cunningham identified certain ruins on the site of the cantonment with the ancient city of Gajipur or Gajnipur, the capital of the Bhatti tribe in the ages preceding the Christian era. Graeco-Bactrian coins, together with ancient bricks, occur over an area of 500 ha. Known within historical times as Fatehpur Baori, Rawalpindi fell into decay during one of the Mongol invasions in the fourteenth century.

It appears that the ancient city went into oblivion as a result of the White Hun devastation. The first Muslim invader, Mahmud of Ghazni 979-1030), gave the ruined city to a Gakhar Chief, Kai Gohar. The town, however, being on an invasion route, could not prosper and remained deserted until Jhanda Khan, another Gakhar Chief, restored it and named it Rawalpindi after the village Rawal in 1493. Rawalpindi remained under the rule of the Gakkhars until Muqarrab Khan, the last Gakkhar ruler, was defeated by the Sikhs under Sardar Milka Singh in 1765. Singh invited traders from the neighbouring commercial centres of Jhelum and Shahpur to settle in the territory.

Early in the nineteenth century Rawalpindi became for a time the refuge of Shah Shuja, the exiled king of Afghanistan, and of his brother Shah Zaman. The present native infantry lines mark the site of a battle fought by the Gakhars under their famous chief Sultan Mukarrab Khan in the middle of the eighteenth century. Rawalpindi was taken by Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1818. It was at Rawalpindi, on March 14, 1849, that the Sikh army under Chattar Singh and Sher Singh finally laid down their arms after the battle of Gujrat and were decisively defeated.

Mingora

Mingora (also spelled Mangora or Mingaora) (Pashto is the largest city in Swat District, North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. It is located at an altitude of 984 metres (3,229 ft) and lies on the banks of River Swat about 2.5 kilometres from Saidu Sharif, the present capital of Swat. As of 1998, the population of Mingora was about 175,000. The city was once a major tourist destination and was described by Queen Elizabeth as the "Switzerland" of the former Empire. However with the rise of Taliban in Pakistan the tourist industry has suffered from clashes between the Taliban and the government. In March 2009 the city, like elsewhere in Swat, came under Taliban rule due to a peace agreement with the government. However the agreement quickly fell apart and in May 2009 government forces were engaged in fierce fighting with the Taliban to end their occupation of the city.

Saidu Sharif

Saidu Sharif (Urdu: سیدو شریف) is the capital city of Swat District in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. It is the upper valley of the Swat River, which rises in the Hindu Kush range. The capital of Swat is Saidu SharifSaidu Sharif, but the main town in the Swat valley is Mingora. It was a princely state (see Swat (princely state)) in the NWFP until it was dissolved in 1969. With high mountains, green meadows, and clear lakes, it is a place of great natural beauty that used to be popular with tourists as "The Switzerland of Pakistan".

In December 2008 most of the area was captured by the Taliban insurgency and it is now too dangerous for tourism. The Islamist militant leader Maulana Fazlullah and his group Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi have banned education for girls and have bombed or torched "more than 180 schools ... along with other government-owned buildings." The Pakistani government in late May of 2009 began a military offensive to regain control of the region.

History

The Swat River is mentioned in the Rig Veda 8.19.37 as the Suvastu river. The first historical mention of the valley goes back to a hymn of the Rigveda(Stein, 1929:viii). Swat has been inhabited for over two thousand years and was known in ancient times as the Udyana. The independent monarchs of this region came under Achaemenid influence, before reverting back to local control in the 4th century BC. In 327 BC, Alexander the Great fought his way to Udegram and Barikot. In Greek accounts these towns have been identified as Ora and Bazira. By 305 BC, the region became a part of the Mauryan Empire. Around the 2nd century BC, the area was occupied by Buddhists, the Indo-Greeks, and the Kushans who were attracted by the peace and serenity of the land. Swat is thought to be the probable birthplace of Vajrayana Buddhism. There are many archaeological sites in the district, and Buddhist relics are common, testimony to their skills as sculptors and architects.

Tourist attractions

There was a popular ski resort in Swat at Malam Jabba, 42 km north east of Saidu Sharif, closed in 2007 due to the decreasing ability of the Pakistani government to maintain security in the region. In June 2008, the ski resort was burned down by militants.

Tour de Satpara Lake

Satpara Lake (jheel) is an important lake in Skardu Valley which supplies water for the town of Skardu, which is located at 2,637 meters (8,652 ft).
